Position: The Henry Samueli School of Engineering at the University of California Irvine seeks applications for the Director of the Edwards Lifesciences Center for Advanced Cardiovascular Technologies.  Candidates should have prior experience in a leadership role combined with an outstanding record of extramural funding and scholarship in the cardiovascular sciences, commensurate with an appointment as a tenured Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering.  The Director provides vision and leadership skills to lead and advance the Center towards world-class research excellence in research and graduate education. The Director must have a strong commitment to translational research, fostering and expanding interactions between the faculty in the School of Engineering and the School of Medicine, as well as the clinical faculty at the UCI Medical Center.

About the Center:  The Edwards Lifesciences Center for Advanced Cardiovascular Technology (http://cardiovascular.eng.uci.edu) is an academic-based research and training center housed within the Henry Samueli School of Engineering at the University of California, Irvine aimed at fostering an interdisciplinary approach towards advancing our understanding of cardiovascular disease.

Department of Biomedical Engineering: The department was founded in 2002 and offers two undergraduate degree programs, and graduate program leading to the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in biomedical engineering. Information about the department can be found here: http://www.eng.uci.edu/dept/bme

School: Founded in 1965, the Henry Samueli School of Engineering (http://www.eng.uci.edu) educates more than 4,000 engineers each year (3,119 undergraduates and 898 graduates) with an integrative approach that blends fundamentals, research and hands-on experience. The school includes five academic departments: biomedical engineering; chemical engineering and materials science; civil and environmental engineering; electrical engineering and computer science; and mechanical and aerospace engineering.

Background
The research in the Disease Systems Biology Program is headed by Prof. Søren Brunak and independent group leader Prof. Lars Juhl Jensen. By joining the program you will be part of a young and dynamic team consisting of international researchers. The Disease Systems Biology Program has close national and international collaborations with hospitals, proteomics centers, and research environments in the general area of computational systems biology. The program shares resources and work closely with the Center for Biological Sequence Analysis at the Technical University of Denmark and its research groups. The program has a strong foundation in analyzing massive amounts of data from widely different experimental technologies and combining it with text mining of the biomedical literature. Overall, the efforts of the program make it possible to engage more strongly in non-hypothesis driven research, which aims to make discoveries from that emerge from the data rather than being the result of specific experiments designed to confirm or disprove given hypotheses.

Job description
The Disease Systems Biology Program at the NNF Center for Protein Research (CPR) offers one postdoc position for appointment at the latest by March 2014. The position is financially supported by the University of Copenhagen 2016 program.

The candidate will primarily focus on computational analysis of mass-spectrometry-based proteomics data. This includes developing new, improved methods for analyzing spectra, optimization of analysis protocols, and application of these to specific datasets. The focus will be on improving the identification of post-translationally modified peptides, which arise in cellular signaling processes and through chemical modification, in particular in ancient samples, which may also consist of mixtures of species. The work will involve close collaboration with the Proteomics Program at CPR. You can read more about the research projects at the Disease Systems Biology

Qualifications

  • Candidates are required to have a Ph.D. degree in science or equivalent.
  • An analytical aptitude of devising innovative solutions to scientific and technical problems.
  • Experience with programming is required, preferably in as scripting language like Python.
  • Knowledge in molecular biology or biochemistry is required.
  • Prior experience with bioinformatics or statistical data analysis is highly desirable.
  • Experience with analysis of proteomics data would be considered a distinct advantage.
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm, motivation, flexibility and confidence.

Place of employment and work
The employment is at the NNF Center for Protein Research (CPR – www.cpr.ku.dk), University of Copenhagen, located in central Copenhagen. The research environment at CPR is vibrant, ambitious, and international, with approx. 30 different nationalities currently represented. The Center comprises modern laboratories and state-of-the-art facilities within protein science. Seminars with high-profile international speakers and regular internal research seminars are organized at the Center. English is the working language at the Center.

Terms of salary and employment
Salary, pension and terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Academics Central organization. Currently, the monthly salary is around 31,800 – 33,500 DKK per month (approximately 5,700-6,000 USD/month) plus 17.1 % in pension contribution.

A Postdoctoral position or Research Scientist position is available starting January 1st, 2015 in the laboratory of Dr. Pedro Miura, Assistant Professor at the University of Nevada, Reno, Department of Biology. Research will be in the area of post-transcriptional gene regulation. Projects will focus on the regulatory mechanisms and biological relevance of extended 3’UTR mRNA isoforms and circular RNAs in the nervous system. Drosophila, mice and mammalian tissue culture will used as model systems. Traditional molecular biology approaches, as well as high-throughput sequencing and CRISPR/Cas mediated genome engineering approaches will be employed. 

The University of Nevada, Reno is a Tier I institution offering a highly productive research environment. The Biology Department is home to 26 faculty members that maintain nationally recognized, extramurally funded research programs, mentor 50 graduate students, and participate in undergraduate teaching. Our rapidly growing department includes five labs that use Drosophila as a model system, and three groups that incorporate computational analysis to address biological questions. Faculty members in the Department of Biology have close ties to the University of Nevada School of Medicine and over $60 million of NIH funds have recently been targeted for biomedical research development on campus. Reno is located in the Sierra Nevada mountains near Lake Tahoe, and has been recently rated as one of the best small cities in the US for outdoor recreation and overall quality of life.

Required Qualifications: A PhD in biological sciences (or soon to be completed) and at least one peer-review publication. Passion to make scientific discoveries in gene regulation. Willingness to work in a team-oriented group.
